Study Centre Programme Spring 2009
JANUARY
11th Kelston Question Time. A panel of experts answer your questions and give opinions on topical issues of the day.
18th The Study Centre Discussion. Giacomo Tortora, engineer with the McLaren team, gives a presentation on what makes Formula One ground-breaking.
25th Intensive Study Day from 10am till 9pm, with football at the usual time. Most leaders will be away on a training course.
Kelston is open for private study each day, but especially on Wednesday late afternoons and all day on Saturday. Pick up the form for the spring retreat from 20-22nd February.
FEBRUARY
1tst All-American Day. Special meal and entertainment, with Super Bowl XLII from Tampa Bay for those who can stay over to watch the match live.
8th The Study Centre Discussion. Dominic Trevett recalls his coast to coast cycle ride last summer from WashingtonDC to Seattle.
15th Chinese Spring Festival. Students from Netherhall talk of their homeland, followed by a special meal to celebrate the Year of the Ox.
22nd Annual Kelston Retreat at Wickenden Manor. Leave Friday 8pm and back at Kelston at 6pm. Evening Civilisation programme on DVD.
Kelston will be raising funds to complete the 25-year Expansion Project. Put your names forward now to register for the Brighton Cycle Ride in June.
MARCH
1st The Study Centre Discussion. Mark Blackwell, psychiatrist, speaks of his professional career.
8th Pre-University Seminars. Alistair Lobo, a business results consultant, leads the first of a two-part seminar: Finding and Following your Purpose.
15th Soap Box. Kelston’s own speakers’ corner, where everyone is invited to get up on the box and express an opinion on a subject of his choice and defend it before a heckling crowd.
22nd Pre-University Seminars. Alistair Lobo gives the second of the two-part seminar: Speaking in Public and Self-confidence.
29th Light-hearted Team Challenge. Teams will solve problems, undertake tasks and answer questions on music, sport and current affairs.
APRIL
5th Music Appreciation Session. Select two songs, one a favourite and the other something more challenging. Each is introduced and played, with opinions given by everyone at the end.

10th Take part in the verbal rough and tumble of a Balloon Debate as you argue your case for survival.
17th Puzzled? An evening of puzzles and mind bogglers to test your initiative and ingenuity.
24th No club today, as most leaders will be attending a training course in Cheshire.
31st Ice Skating in Streatham. Leave at 2.15pm. Bring a travel card, £8 and a pair of gloves. Regular activities will take place in the evening.
FEBRUARY
7th An introduction to Chinese culture to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Our guest speaker, Stephen Tsang, speaks about life and culture in modern day China.
14th Feature film. Sit back and enjoy a recent blockbuster on the big screen.
Those who wish to come for extra private study can come to the Study Club on Wednesday afternoons after school from 4 till 7pm.
21st The spring seniors five-a-side football competition at a local sports centre. Bring along kit and £4. Friends are welcome to take part. Regular activities in the evening.
28th The Design Project. Learn the ‘ins and outs’ of designing a building. Then put the theory into practice as you attempt to redesign Kelston.
MARCH
7th Art-themed Evening. Discover the great artists of history and put some of their techniques into practice as you create your own work of art.
14th Music Appreciation Evening. Introduce others to a song you like. Everyone has the chance to give their opinion and vote.
21st Chess Challenge. Battle your way up the ranks as you endeavour to become the Chess Champion of Kelston.
28th Kelston Film Productions presents: Kelston Comedy. Rehearse, film and watch your sketches all in an evening.
APRIL
4th Pitch and Putt in Morden Park. Leave at 2:30pm and bring £4. Regular activities in the evening.

JANUARY
10th Senses Competition. The ideal start to the term after the Christmas holidays to get your taste buds working again (- we will not be tasting Brussels sprouts this time!).
17th 2009 News Forecast. Join our team of special reporters broadcasting to the world the major events that will happen this year.
24th No club today, as most leaders will be attending a training course in Cheshire.
31st Marathon Art Morning. Your artistic talent will be tested to the full today when you confront three different forms of plastic art. At the end we will have a very special auction of the ‘works of art’ produced.
FEBRUARY
7th Feature Film. We will watch a recently released family blockbuster, where rumour has it robots feature predominantly.
14th The Puppet Show. A chance for your favourite puppets to perform on the specially erected Kelston stage.
21st Excursion to Chislehurst Caves. Have you ever experienced total darkness? Don’t miss this opportunity! Bring £4, a zones 1-6 travel card and packed lunch. Back at 3.00pm.
28th Build a Bridge in an Hour Competition. Design, build and test a straw bridge with a one-hour time limit.
MARCH
7th Galaxy Quest. Kelston’s lounge will be transformed into a different universe for a very special multimedia team quiz.
14th The annual NBC 5-a-side Football Tournament. Get a team of friends together to enter the competition. Entry forms with full details will be available from early February
21st .Spring Grand Prix. Another chance to use your precision-point driving skills around the Kelston Scalextric track.
28th Egg Descent Challenge. One egg, three-storey height, and only one drop. May the best parachute (and alternative device) win!
APRIL

7th The Study Centre Discussion. Expert from the Disney Studios opens the lid on computer game programming.
14th Evening ultimate Frisbee game out on the common, followed by ice cream sundaes on the grass.
21st The Annual London to Brighton Fundraising Cycle Ride. This year is important since the final expansion works in Kelston are scheduled. Comedy sketches on video in the evening.
28th Day excursion to Harrison’s Rocks in Tunbridge Wells after a lunch at Cosmo Oriental Restaurant in the Spa town. Bring money for meal and minibus travel.
JULY
5th Barbecue for all the family at Kelston, starting at 2 and going on till 6pm. Bring along food and drink to contribute to the fare.
12th End of term barbecue for members and recent Kelstonians, with a special football game in the afternoon.

25th Art Creativity Evening. We will choose regular activities today.
MAY
2nd Kelston Classic Film Club presents ‘Twelve Angry Men’. If you cannot unravel the evidence before the jury can, then just sit back and enjoy watching it happen.
9th Join the Roundheads or the Cavaliers for Shaun Trust’s re-enactment of the English Civil War.
16th Crane Building Competition. Your challenge is to design and build the crane that can support a given weight from the furthest distance.
23rd All-day excursion to Oxford to see the sights and go punting on the river. Bring £7 and a packed lunch. Be here at 10am.
30th Arrive at 10.30am with your bicycle and a packed lunch for a morning cycle ride. Otherwise, come as usual and take your seat for the FA Cup Final on the big screen. Football on the common afterwards.
JUNE
6th Take first base for this evening’s softball match on Wandsworth Common.
13th Afternoon Tennis Competition. Bring £3, a racquet and tennis balls if you have them. Regular activities in the evening.
20th An expert in karate and other martial arts is our guest speaker this evening.
27th Volleyball match on the common.
JULY
4th All-day excursion to Beachy Head on the south coast. Arrive by 10am with £5, a packed lunch and your swimming gear.
Barbecue for all the family at Kelston on Sunday 5th, starting at 2pm and going on till 6pm. Bring along food and drink to contribute to the fare. 19-25th July for the summer camp to the Lake District.
11th Snake Surprise. Slither into the lounge for a get-together with Ted Wade about snakes and the chance to hold some of these amazing creatures.

25th Kelston Western Movie Productions: Sample films. Today we will watch a selection of clips. A chance to get ideas for our own movie, to be filmed in a fortnight.
MAY
2nd KWM Productions: Props. All your artistic skills will be needed to make the props for next week’s filming session.
9th KWM Productions: Shooting. Lights, camera, action! Everything is now ready for the filming of an epic western. Don’t miss taking part!
16th Premiere of the Kelston Western. Actors and their friends are invited to watch. Afterwards we will play softball out on the common.
23rd Miniature Medieval Town. Help model part of a medieval village. A virtual tour of the finished work will be uploaded onto the Kelston website.
28th-31st The Kelston Summer Camp from Thursday till Sunday at High Ashurst outdoor activity centre. Pick up full details and come along.
JUNE
6th Get the engines revving for a very special Juniors Summer Grand Prix. The 4-car digital Scalextric will be fully operational on a revamped track.
13th A big breakfast might be needed for today’s Juniors Team Challenge. Teamwork essential in order to succeed in these outdoor challenges.
20th Summer 2-Sports Day. Two completely different ball games in a morning. We will alternate between cricket and volleyball out on the common.
27th By popular demand, an excursion to the Coral Reef, Bracknell’s water world. Bring £7, a packed lunch, and swimming gear. We will be back at 5pm.
JULY
4th Following last year’s successful day, we will hold the second Kelston Juniors Frisbee-football Tournament. There will be fun prizes for the winners.

Sunday 27th January '"Does God Exist? Apparently Not" (St.Thomas Aquinas)' A discussion of the two chief arguments - seven hundred years ago and today - for not believing in God: that the world is evil and that we can explain everything by e.g. science. Christopher Martin, old Kelstonian and professor of philosophy in Houston, Texas, argues that today's anti-God debate was solved in God's favour many hundreds of years ago.

Tuesday Study Club Year 9-13, Tues 4.30-6.45pm
The Tuesday Study Club is an ideal chance for boys to get down to their homework in a supervised study period in the Kelston library. There are also classes of catechism and of spiritual formation.
Kelston Wednesdays Year 7, Weds 4.30-6.45pm
There is an additional programme for those in Year 7 on Wednesdays. It aims to help the boys to improve their ability to study well on their own as well as enjoy constructive activities. It allows those who cannot regularly attend the Juniors on Saturday mornings to have their own programme of activities on another day.
The monthly recollection will take place on Friday evenings for the older boys, followed by a simple buffet meal, £3.
